Stewards Comments

OLD BOOMER and CHAINSAW were slow into stride. IL SOGNATORE raced wide throughout. MAGIC OF KINGSTON raced wide from the 600m. The trainer of SECRET MENTOR and apprentice were questioned regarding the reason for that gelding racing in a rearward position today compared to a forward position last start. Apprentice stated that he was squeezed out shortly after the start and he had elected not to endeavour to obtain a forward position as he would have been obliged to race wide in the early stages. The gelding had then commenced to race fiercely and he had been continuously easing off heels of runners in front. He further stated he had been unable to obtain a clear passage until after straightening. The trainer stated that he had instructed the apprentice to endeavour to ride the horse in a forward position or lead and that it would be his intention to race the gelding in a forward position in future. Trainer was questioned regarding the disappointing performance of FANCY FLYER. He stated that at the 600m when the rider attempted to urge the gelding along it had failed to respond. He further stated that the rider had advised him that the gelding had made a gurgling sound on pulling up and it was his intention to have the gelding vetted prior to racing again. In addition he advised that he would make gear changes to the gelding before its next start. When questioned as to the reason KING OF THE HILL raced in a forward position today compared to being ridden in a rearward position at Kalgoorlie, trainer stated that the gelding was unable to maintain a forward position when racing in the 1042m races due to the early fast pace. Today he instructed the rider to sit just off the pace as he was of the opinion that the gelding would be better suited to this style of racing, he was disappointed he had failed to run on over the concluding stages.
