Pre-Race Elective Sample Testing

Through the Stewards, the Racing Chemistry Laboratory (RCL) will analyse non-race day elective urine samples for certain long-acting therapeutic drugs. The purpose of this service is twofold. It allows trainers to determine the suitability for racing of an animal after:

• The administration of long-acting medications; or
• An animal has been transferred from the premises of another trainer.

Trainers and veterinarians are encouraged to use this service; however, it does not remove the responsibility, under the Rules of Racing, for a trainer to present all animals under their control free of any Prohibited Substances on race-day.

Sample Submission

1. Urine is required for testing.
2. Samples are submitted through the Stewards.
3. Stewards must be advised prior to sample submission.
3. Trainers will be charged through the RWWA accounting system.
4. Samples should be submitted in a clean jar/container with lid or an RCL urine collection bottle available from the Stewards.
5. The following details must be supplied when samples are submitted:

• Animal name and sex.
• Drug name/s for which the sample is to be tested.
• Treatment details i.e. drug/dose/date administered.
• Trainer's name and contact details.

Stewards will advise trainer when results are received from the RCL.

Drugs Tested

The following long-acting drugs can be tested for under the program:

• Anabolic steroids
• Corticosteroids (i.e. Depo-Medrol)
• Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs e.g. phenylbutazone)
• Procaine (from procaine penicillin)

Cost

Cost of sample analysis (as advised by the RCL on 01.06.05 - all prices include GST)

• $150.00 per drug category ($185.00 for anabolic steroids) when received at RCL at least 2 working days prior to the day of the race.
• $325.00 per drug category ($440.00 for anabolic steroids) when received at RCL 1 working day prior to the day of the race.
