2009 Melbourne Cup Race turnover for WA TAB was $14, 507, 443 (off course tote betting only). WA punters established a new record this year by investing 1.3% more than the previous year and 22% above 2007 despite having one less selling hour prior to jump as a result of daylight savings in the Eastern States.
The win by Shocking was the first for both Jockey Corey Brown and Trainer Mark Kavanagh bringing the horse’s overall stakes to $3,882,525. The 2009 Race time of 3:23.87 was more than 7 seconds slower than the race record of 3:16.30 set in 1990. The official Winning Margin was 3/4 of a length.
Both Master O'Reilly and Newport replicated their 2008 performances finishing 4th and 10th respectively again this year. The two favoured runners in betting Alcopop and Viewed finished 6th and 7th respectively more than 4 lengths behind Shocking. Warringah ridden by Damien Oliver finished in last place.
