25 September 2007 Rising Stars of Racing - Again on Display

The 2007 Nagmart Saddlery Rising Stars Apprentice Jockey Series commences at the Midweek Belmont meeting this Wednesday 26 September.

The 2006 Rising Stars Series held last year was clearly won by Dion Luciani who travelled to all of the meetings to collect his points.

The series prize money is worth $1000 for the winner and $300 and $200 for second and third.

The series will run on the following race days:

Belmont Wednesday 26 September
York Sunday 30 September
Geraldton Wednesday 3 October
Narrogin Thursday 4 October
Moora Saturday 6 October
Toodyay Sunday 7 October
Belmont Wednesday 10 October
Geraldton Sunday 14 October
Northam Wednesday 17 October
York Thursday 18 October

The series operates within the following procedures:

Apprentice Jockeys will have the opportunity to collect points at each of the above meetings.

The Apprentice with the most points at the end of the series is declared the winner.

The series is designed to give all Apprentice Jockeys a fair chance of winning with less experienced riders given points for securing rides at Rising Stars meetings.

Points will be awarded as follows:

  • 1st ride for the day - points based on claims for the day
    eg. 3kg claim = 3 points, 2kg claim = 2 points, 1.5kg claim = 1 point
  • Each winner ridden on the day will earn 5 points
  • Each 2nd placegetter on the day will earn 2 points
  • Each 3rd placegetter on the day will earn 1 point

The Apprentice Jockey leading the points tally at the beginning of each day will wear the 'Rising Stars' racing silks, a similar concept to the yellow leader's jersey in cycling. The owners and trainers of the horses eligible to wear these colours will be consulted for permission to use them on the morning of the race. During the last series these colours were successfully worn to win on a number of occasions.

Limited edition 'Rising Stars' trading cards will again be available on course at all participating race clubs - these proved very popular last year.
