All the races for the 2008/09 racing year have been run and won and what a year it was for the WESTCHA$E Incentive Scheme and WA bred greyhounds generally. At year end, WESTCHA$E bonuses paid topped $500,000 for the first time at $509,250 (9.3% over budget). Local breeders and owners received $47,950 above the amount paid during 2007-08.
The owners or breeders of 249 individual greyhounds earned a WESTCHA$E bonus during the year (down only 3 from 2007-08), while 49 greyhounds earned multiple bonuses (up 5). The multiple earners collected $298,050 in bonuses (up $56,250) which represented 58.5% of the scheme’s total payouts as against 52.4% last year.
The Top 10 WESTCHA$E Earners accumulated 34% of the bonus dollars (up from 28%) and interestingly 7 of the top 10 were bitches. A total of 16 greyhounds earned $5,000 or more for their connections as against 15 last year.
MISS SLICK was the most successful locally-bred greyhound during 2008-09 earning $59,700 in WESTCHA$E bonuses for her connections, including $35,000 for her two major Group race victories - the Group1 Perth Cup and Group 2 All Stars Sprint.
