18 August 2011 Carnarvon Preview August 21

Geraldton galloper Maruse is set to launch his Carnarvon Cup campaign in Sunday’s Bob Burkett Memorial-Exmouth Cup.
Trainer Jodie Liakousis said a top three finish in the 1600m race would secure the gelding a start in the $40,000 staying feature on September 24.
“He would need to be running home strongly and at least figure in the placings,” Liakousis said.
“He is working his way back to peak fitness after three starts back and might even find the mile on Sunday a little sharp.
“He is racing like a genuine stayer and will improve as he goes over further ground.
“If he runs to expectations we will press ahead with a cup campaign.”
Maruse has failed to fill the placings since returning from a spell but displayed encouraging signs at Belmont a week ago when fourth to Get The Net.
The Bletchley Park gelding ran on strongly from seventh on the corner and was doing his best work late when beaten by less than two lengths.
“I haven’t been disappointed by his form,” Liakousis said.
“He raced first-up without the benefit of a trial and needed the run second-up.
“After his 1400m effort he is exactly where I want him to be at this stage of his preparation.”
Liakousis expects Vintage Mo and Zach Tyler’s Don’t Like Dolls to be the hardest to beat.
“You have to respect Vintage Mo despite top weight,” Liakousis said.
“He has been in very good form and is from an astute stable.
“Don’t Like Dolls has also been around the mark and can’t be left out of calculations.”
