Geraldton Harness Racing Club

Brief History

It took three attempts over a period of 92 years before Geraldton gave birth to Harness Racing. The first attempt was in 1914. Geraldton had a population of only 4,454 people and with World War 1 imminent it was decided not to proceed. Another attempt was made in 1960 but failed because of lack of funds. In September 1992 a public meeting elected a Steering Committee to test community response. Then a Management Committee was formed under the Presidency of John Kruize and the club became fully incorporated in December 1992. Applications were made to WA Trotting Assn. and The Racecourse Development Trust for funding to cover establishing the track, fencing and stewards towers. Thankfully they were approved lte in 1996. Two 'exhibition' races were held on the Geraldto Turf Club's training track on 17th April 1995. They drew a huge crowd and met with instant success. Two further 'exhibition' events were run at the Turf Club meeting on the Easter weekend of 1997. The track was put down, all other construction was completed and all was in readiness for the first full season to commence on 7th June 1997.
