05 June 2008 Elektra Favoured in Unique 'Marathon'

Punters have the opportunity to witness a unique racing event at Cannington this Saturday night with the running of a 744m FTA for the first time nearly five years.

The 744m is the longest journey in WA greyhound racing and has only ever been contested on a handful of occasions since it was first run on 31 August 2002.

It was on that inaugural occasion that Jedi Lightsabre set the current track record of 43.95 and there is a $500 bonus to the connections of the greyhound that can break that mark this weekend.

While there’s no form over this ‘marathon’ distance for the greyhounds that will line up on Saturday night the race appears to be tailor-made for the brilliant stayer Elektra.

Winner of Group One Galaxy in April with a breathtaking come from behind victory Elektra is known for getting stronger the longer the race goes on and is well suited here.

Meanwhile in the 530m FTA the Linda Britton-trained Eye Murunna will be gunning for his sixth win in a row and should start favorite despite being awkwardly drawn in box seven.

Dilston Heights has also been impressive in chalking up five on-the-trot as he has worked his way through the grades but faces his sternest test to date against this field.

Elektra, seen here winning a Galaxy heat, is favoured to win on Saturday night.
