14 August 2008 WA Sprint and Distance Championships

There's plenty a stake in the WA Sprint and Distance Championships at Cannington this Saturday night with the winners going on to represent the state at the Nationals finals in Sydney on 30 August.

The draw has evened out the Sprint final (530m) slightly with the two main chances, Octanol and Miss Slick, starting from wide alleys.

Miss Slick boasts the sixth fastest time ever recorded at Cannington and has missed a podium finish only twice in 30 starts at the track.

One of the few greyhounds capable of winning the race at both ends Miss Slick has the potential to burst of the traps but is also a powerful finisher.

The David Hobby-trained Octanol is still a relatively inexperienced chaser but has already collected the WA Derby as well as completed a relatively successful interstate campaign.

Bear Cat is a major contender from the red.

This greyhound from the Linda Britton kennels recorded the fastest qualifying time in 30.34 from the same box last week.

If, and that’s a big if, he jumps as well as he did last week Bear Cat will be hard to hold out.

Britton has another two runners in the race with Vulture Street, winner of three of his past four starts, and the consistent West On Paris.

Of the others in the field Majority Rules is a recent Darwin Cup winner, while Spring Sensation and October Typhoon are handy without being brilliant.

In the Distance final (715m) both Big Loose Buddy and Tayza won their heats and both can show pace out of the boxes so their early speed battle could determine the result.

Galaxy winner Elektra has not been racing in the best of form recently but she loves the big stage and can never be ruled up over this distance.

No doubt she will be pressing the leaders in the run to finish.

Key Card is an honest performer and could surprise at odds.
