Notice to Drivers – PHENTERMINE
24 February, 2017
Harness
Issued: 24 February 2017
Drivers are reminded that under the Rules of Harness Racing (see Rules 250 onwards) Phentermine is a banned substance in drivers when present in a urine sample at a concentration above 500μg/L as it may affect their ability to drive safely.
Phentermine is often prescribed for weight loss and is available under a variety of trade names including Duromine, Metermine and Adipex.
Any person currently taking this medication should desist from driving and consult with the Stewards, who may refer them to the RWWA Medical Advisor as provided by Rule 252B (d) to assess their suitability to continue driving whilst on this medication.
Whilst the rules provide that the Controlling body may permit a driver to receive a specified banned substance where such medication is essential treatment for a substantial illness, condition or ailment and has been prescribed by a medical practitioner RWWA has recently consulted with the RWWA Medical Advisor who has advised that phentermine above the prescribed level may affect a driver to an extent that could constitute a danger to the driver or other drivers. Accordingly RWWA as the Controlling body cannot permit a driver to receive this substance if it is likely to result in readings above the prescribed threshold.
All Drivers are reminded that if they are taking this or any other prescribed substances which could have specified banned substances, they must make application to the Controlling Body for permission to drive whilst taking these substances before they drive.
When being sampled, the person concerned should always list any and all substances they are taking. A failure to do so may lead to action being taken against them if subsequent analysis reveals the presence of a banned substance that has not been declared and/or approved.
Under no circumstances shall a person be granted retrospective exemption under the banned substance rules.
It is a driver’s responsibility to ensure that any medications being taken are free from prohibited substances.
