It was a real heart stopper, but fledging reinsman Robert Abercromby celebrated a personal milestone at Gloucester Park on Tuesday.
Just over a year since he was granted his license and after more than 100 drives, Abercromby won his first city race on Iam Lambros.
“It has been one of my ambitions to win a race at Gloucester Park and it’s just unreal,” Abercromby said.
“I’ve had wins at other tracks, but to be able to do it at Gloucester Park is a pretty big thing for me personally.
“It was just a really enjoyable experience and now that I have achieved it I can take if off my bucket list.”
Iam Lambros’ victory goes a long way to validating Abercromby’s decision to devote all his energies to harness racing.
In a bold and courageous move Abercromby sold a successful business to take up a permanent involvement in the sport.
“I wanted to take a break from a tyre business that I had built up,” Abercromby said.
“I was getting a little stressed by it all and wanted to take a break.
“With my family background I wanted to test the waters in harness racing.
“I’ve decided to pursue it as a hobby which I think is what the industry needs.
“We need more hobby participants more than just a few professionals.”
Abercromby says his next ambition in harness racing is to tastes success as a trainer and follow in the footsteps of his father Craig, who prepares a team of around 12 horses including Iam Lambros.
“Taking out a trainer’s license is the next thing I want to do,” Abercromby said.
“I’ve had the experience with dad and helping him around the stables.
“He is a great mentor to have and to learn off.
“I will probably look to do it in the next 12-months.”
