Galaxy Star will head to the spelling paddock on a winning note, after another impressive performance in the Marina East Waterfront Apartments By Blackburne Handicap (2000m).
The Redoute’s Choice mare faced, arguably, one of the trickiest assignments of her career to date, with the in form trio of Missile Launch, Dudemanbro and At The Ready all in the race.
Jockey William Pike settled the mare with two runners behind her, as Corporate Larrikin and Master Magician controlled proceedings in front.
The leading hoop was patient with the mare on the turn for home, and waited until the 200m mark before urging her along.
Galaxy Star quickly found top gear in the closing stages, and came away to win by just over a length.
Dudemanbro made up solid headway in the straight and finished second, while Very Tempting recorded her best result since winning last year’s WA Oaks finishing third.
Missile Launch, who was considered the biggest threat to Galaxy Star, raced a touch keen at the rear of the field, and never made an impact in the closing stages.
Owner Bob Peters said Galaxy Star would now be given a well deserved break, after a preparation which yielded three wins from four starts.
“I was very pleased with her,” he said.
“It was an experiment to see if she could run this distance so we know what we have going forward.
“A couple of people said to me that it’s a big jump from 1600 to 2000, but on her breeding I was fairly confident.”
Peters said he wouldn’t lock in any races in particular during the spring and summer period, but indicated a shot at Group 1 company could be a possibility.
Meanwhile, talented filly Market Ruler has made it three wins on the trot, with a tough win in the Magic Millions Plate (1000m).
The two-year-old’s win gave William Pike the first of his two wins in the first half of the card, and yet another two-year-old winner for trainer Simon Miller.
Miller said he felt the filly was a little below her best today, which added merit to her victory.
“I know she was playing up in the barriers a bit,” Miller said.
“Whether she was in there too long or whether she has had enough…she was strong late.”
