Joondalup Giants Rugby League Awarded Community TAB Sports Grant
4 April, 2018
Community TAB of Racing and Wagering WA (RWWA) has awarded Joondalup Giants Rugby League Club a $2000 grant as one of the first sporting clubs to receive a grant after the program was launched in November.
Out of over 200 sporting clubs from around WA who applied for a grant from Community TAB, Joondalup Giants Rugby League Club is one of two groups to receive a grant this month.
Joondalup Giants Junior Rugby League President Gregg Pearson who applied for the grant on behalf of the club said the grant allows us as a grassroots sports team to grow a little bit more, and at the end of the day without grassroots sports there is no professional level.
“This means a lot to any club, however for us this is huge, as Rugby League struggles in WA, and securing grants and sponsors each year to ensure we can continue to operate and provide families with the right facilities is a major task for us.
“This will take a huge amount of pressure off of us and allow us to purchase the new training equipment we require,” Mr Pearson said.
“This club is a family, with less than 300 playing members both senior and junior, we are a close knit sport community. Grants like this help us to operate, but our volunteers are what keeps us alive.
“With the work NRLWA does in the surrounding schools and the linking of our club with those communities to deliver rugby league outside of school times we are working to cement ourselves into the surrounding community.”
RWWA Chief Executive Officer Richard Burt said it is an exciting new initiative for Community TAB and a great opportunity for sporting clubs.
“We recognise the importance of grass roots sport throughout WA and understand that it takes time and resources to keep a club running within the community, so we are excited to be giving the opportunity to help relieve this burden on clubs,” Mr Burt said.
“RWWA has been supporting the WA sport and recreation industry for many years through providing over $30million of TAB turnover over 10 years to the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) and more recently through Community TAB sponsoring the WA Football League and WA Integrated Football Program.
“Community TAB has been giving back to the WA community since 2014 through major partnerships, state-wide fundraising programs and sponsorship of prestigious events.”
Community TAB will provide at least one grant each month to a sporting club to further their contribution to the sport and recreation industry in WA.
Once a club applies for a grant, the application will stay within the pool until the grant is awarded.
