Misty Metal turned a few heads with a brilliant win over 1000m in the Schweppes Handicap at Belmont on Saturday, crossing the line 4 ¼ lengths ahead of the second placed horse, Deep Cover.
Misty Metal’s third straight win after twin victories at Northam drew high praise from Todd Harvey, who prepares the talented three-year-old in partnership with his father, Robert.
“He’s a fresh horse, was well weighted and after three weeks between runs I was confident he would run well,” Todd Harvey said.
“But I was surprised by the ease of the win.
“She is a winner who knows how to find the line.
“She’s maturing, but is progressing along well.
“There is another 1000m graduation race in three weeks.”
Misty Metal, an Oratorio filly out of Rubiton mare, Rubitawny, has five wins, two placings and $115,835 in prizemoney from her 10 career starts.
Harvey has an opinion of Misty Metal and believes if she continues to display improvement she could measure up to stakes company later in the year.
“If she continues to progress then I think a race like the Jungle Mist (1200m) could be on the cards,” Harvey said.
Meanwhile Harvey is optimistic Apparition can get his first win on the board in the Yellowglen Plate (1300m) at Belmont on Wednesday.
The gelding is knocking on the door of victory after three placings from four starts including a second to Dawn Armada two weeks ago.
“I think he can win,” said Harvey.
“He’s been competitive on a Saturday and has been knocking on the door.
“He has the experience against a few who haven’t raced.
“He is well weighted and has drawn well.”
Apparition has drawn barrier five for Troy Turner.
Harvey also said budding star Black Sabbath, unbeaten in his two appearances, returns to work after a six-week break next Tuesday.
