For the first time in more than a decade, greyhound racing will be trialled on a Sunday.
Greyhound racing on Sunday’s has been a rare occurrence in Western Australia, with the dual code meeting in Northam and New Year’s Eve meetings some of the few occasions a meeting has been held.
Over the next six weeks, Northam will play host to Sunday meetings as a trial to see how it performs on a busy racing day.
Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s greyhound racing Manager Peter Howell said with the absence of the ever popular Hong Kong thoroughbred meeting on a Sunday, it presented the ideal opportunity to trial Sunday meetings.
“With Hong Kong having their recess, there was an option for Sunday to be a day for us to race,” he said.
“It’s an opportunity to test the local greyhound product in a popular market.
“For those in the industry that find it difficult to race during the week due to work commitments, Sunday is a viable option.”
In a further boost for the local greyhound racing scene, racing is set to return to Mandurah on Tuesday, after undergoing track resurfacing as well as other improvements to the facilities.
Mandurah’s return features 10 races on Tuesday night, and gets underway at 6.12.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s Northam meeting has eight races, and starts at 3.19 on Sunday afternoon.
