Pinjarra Classic: What History Says
21 February, 2018
Thoroughbred
Feature racing returns to Pinjarra Park this Sunday afternoon, with the running of the Listed $120,000 Pinjarra Classic (1300m).
The race was first run in 1998, where it was taken out by the Michael Campbell-trained Mr Callahan.
Only one trainer has won the race on more than one occasion, Keith Jeffreys won it twice in 2006 and 2008 with tough gelding Royal Lott.
Paul Harvey is the most successful jockey in the race’s history, winning on three occasions in 1998, 2001 and 2002.
Five more jockeys have won the race on multiple occasions; Jason Whiting in 2009 and 2016, Peter Hall in 2004 and 2008, Shaun O’Donnell in 2006 and 2012, Troy Turner in 2003 and 2014, and William Pike in 2010 and 2013.
Barrier two and nine are the most successful barriers, having produced four winners of the race. Man Booker jumped from barrier six last year, while barrier one has produced two winners.
Battle Hero will have to equal Black Heart Bart’s feat of carrying 59kg, the most weight carried by a Pinjarra Classic winner to win this weekend.
The race has been run over 1300m every year, except in 2008 where it was run over 1200m, while in 2012 and 2013 it was run over 1500m.
Last year’s Pinjarra Classic was the smallest field to have contested the race in its short history.
Rebel King is the only runner from last year’s edition to be nominated for this year’s race.
