WA Country Cups caught up with Ms Wells to talk about country racing and racing fashion, as well as the upcoming final, here is what she had to say:
1. What do you love about country racing? Country racing events have such a diverse range of people from those serious gamblers, those that like the occasional flutter and of course those that like to dress up. Events in the country regions are often few and far between so the country racing events gives the opportunity for those around the region to have an event to attend.
2. How long have you been going to the races for and what are some of your favourite memories? I am originally from Bunbury and have attended many Bunbury Cups and other events at Ascot. My favourite memory is the hype before the event, everyone discussing their outfits, predicting the weather and getting ready on the day.
3. Why do you enter Fashions on the Field? To push myself out of my comfort zone. Getting up on stage and being judged on style is terrifying as it personal and almost an intimate affair.
4. Describe your style. Eclectic! My style changes on my mood, the weather and whatever I am into. I do think I am a little alternative, however my friends would be the better judge of that.
5. What tips do you have for people entering Fashions on the Field? Try to relax, have fun and most of all smile. There is nothing more attractive than happiness.
6. What are some of your favourite things about the Gascoyne region? The coastline in this area is breathtakingly picturesque and should be on everyone’s bucket list. The fishing and the variety of fresh seafood available to catch is in abundance. You will almost never go home without dinner that night.
The fresh food and seafood particularly in the winter months, we can buy direct from the plantations – from the farm to the table.
The people are so friendly and welcoming. I rarely get a trip to the Woolworths without running into someone.
7. What does it mean to you to be going to ascot to compete in the final? It’s surprising as there was such a high calibre of competitors, I really didn’t think I had a chance of placing, let alone winning. I feel very proud to represent the Gascoyne Region considering I have only resided here for 18 months.
