WA Country Cups caught up with Sharon to talk about country racing and racing fashion, as well as the upcoming Final, here is what she had to say:
1. What do you love about country racing? I love the friendliness of the smaller country-racing communities. This is where the grass roots of racing begin and the fashion is an amazing bonus. But equally as important, I appreciate the race horses and industry people themselves.
2. How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories? I have been involved with horses from a young age and my parents were members of the local race courses.
I think my favorite memory was a lesson I learnt from my late father. He was old fashion and a traditionalist so dressing appropriately for the occasion was important. Except one race day I added a twist of Madonna (one large black clip on earring on one ear and a yellow leopard print drop earring on the other). Furious, my father refused to go to the races unless I changed. I didn’t, but I remember his disapproval and I felt uncomfortable around the elegantly dressed ladies all day. To this day I appreciate the lesson I learnt from him in the formality and tradition that is honored in one of the oldest sports.
3. Why do you enter Fashions on the Field? I applaud the racing board for encouraging, rewarding and celebrating ladies fashion without degrading women. It gives every age and shape of lady a chance to dress up, have fun with the other competitors and participate in every aspect of the races. And of course, there is the chance to win an awesome prize.
4. Describe your style? Classic, feminine and understated.
5. What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field? Wear a style that compliments your figure, makes you feel comfortable and confident but still has a twist of the latest fashion. And then of course accessorize especially hats and shoes. I don’t think one can ever feel too smart.
6. What are some of your favourite things about the Kimberley Region? I love driving through the Kimberly region. There is a unique beauty in the vastness and contrasting landscapes. I love the endless pristine white beaches and enjoy the friendly country towns, Broome being my favorite.
7. What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the final? It’s such an honor to be chosen to represent the Kimberly region, to celebrate ladies fashion and be a part of women’s increasing participation in horse racing Of course, having a chance to win a trip to Royal Ascot would fulfill a long-time dream.
