Yindi Delivers For Kersley

Promising Demerit gelding Yindi finally delivered for in-form trainer Fred Kersley when he came with a barnstorming finish to win at Belmont on Wednesday.

Capping a perfect day for Kersley, Yindi, racing first up since February, broke his maiden status with a strong turn of foot in the Magic Millions Maiden (1200m)

Going back from a wide draw, Yindi, ridden by Mitchell Pateman, drew clear at the 100m and held a comfortable 1 ¾ length margin over his nearest rival.

Yindi, who gave Kersley the second-leg of a double, posted the first win of his short career after three placings from his previous five starts.

Kersley believes Yindi could shape into a promising horse.

“He came back fresh and in a good frame of mind,” Kersley said.

“I was a bit worried by the barrier of course, but Mitch (Pateman) gave him a good run in transit.

“He hit the line well and is a promising horse.

“He has above average speed and when he let down he had a turn of foot.

“He will probably go to a Saturday race next start.”

Meanwhile Kersley admitted he was running out of ideas with Make Mine Champers.

The daughter of Medaglia D’Oro had gone without a win in seven career starts and was largely ignored by punters as a $20 chance.

But in a timely and welcome change of form Make Mine Champers responded to take out the James Boag’s Premium Maiden (1650m).

Ridden by Shaun O’Donnell, the three-year-old produced a late burst to overhaul pacesetter Flat Biccy and score by a neck.

“It’s about time is all I have to say,” Kersley said.

“She has been a work in progress and it’s been a long time in the making.

“She has always shown a bit, but is a slow maturing filly.

“That was by far her best run.

“She had shown promise in her early days, but took a while to get there.”
