23 October 2008 Ladies Aiming to Break Northam Drought

The ladies will be aiming to breaking a drought in Sunday’s XXXX Gold Northam Cup.

No female trainer or jockey has had success in the historic race that will be run over 1600 metres for the first time on the weekend.

Vivienne Ferrier and Alana Williams will be aiming to create history with veteran galloper Who Did It. The nine-year-old was placed fourth in last year’s cup and was a recent winner in the Listed St Leger at Belmont Park on July 19. He does love the wet and if conditions suit he could come into play.

Bernadine Dudley will be represented by Black Douglas who has been racing consistently but without much luck. He has had seven placings this campaign but his last win was just over a year ago.

And Louise Newman will saddle-up Belarus who finished second to Zhamenka at a recent barrier trial at Lark Hill. It has been a long time between drinks for this 6-year-old gelding whose last win was the 2007 Bunbury Cup.

The last win for Yippyia was only last week and the Gino Poletti-trained galloper is in red-hot form and poses a serious threat on Sunday.

Frank Maynard is confident about the chances of Doyoudare who had a tough run in last week’s Northerly Stakes behind Megatic and you cannot dismiss the chances of the Lindsey Smith-trained Capuchin who will have the services of champion jockey Paul Harvey aboard.

The XXXX Gold Northam Cup is race 7 of the afternoon and will be run at 4.15 pm.
