Northam Harness Racing Club

A Brief History of The Club

The early years of the Northam Trotting Club have conflicting reports of the inaugural Northam Trot Meeting. A trot book on display in the P.G. Norrish Pavilion lists that:

The Inaugural Northam Trot Meeting was held on Wednesday 16th November, 1932.

President - O. Northey

Vice President - A. Breeze

Cost of Entry - Gents 3/-, Ladies 2/-

Cost of Programme - 1/-

A list of results found in the archives are for a meeting held on 28th September 1916.

The Northam Harness Racing Club as it is known today commenced operation in 1962. Mr P.G. Norrish was the President and Mr. I. Paddison, Secretary. The original Commitee consisted of - J. Andrew, C. Heal, F. McNamara, T.G.Stratton, S.L. Cook, A.E. Peters, G. Nuich, F.J. Marting, L. Males, J. Luscombe.

The track was built by volunteers and with financial support from members, and the sale of debentures.

The Northam Harness Racing Club races 23 meetings throughout the year, with the York Harness Racing Club racing 5 meetings throughout the year at the same venue; holds trials once a week for 50 weeks of the year and used a training complex for local trainers. A greyhound track was built in the centre of the harness racing track and was completed in 1997. The Avon Valley Greyhound Racing Association race every Monday from May to October and trial every Saturday.

Once a year the two Clubs combine and hold a trot/dog meeting.

Excellent facilities have been built mainly by volunteers, and successful trot meetings are run throughout the year, creating part-time employment for a number of local people.

Northam is one of the four primary Harness Racing Clubs in Western Australia. There are 86 Members and 10 Life Members.

Three major events are held each year - The Northam Pacing Cup, The Village Kid Sprint and the Combined Trot/Greyhound meeting.
