RWWA Stewards conducted a track inspection of the Mingenew race track on 6 March 2008. Following this inspection it was determined that the Mingenew track is unlikely to be in suitable condition to conduct a race meeting within the next month.
To minimise inconvenience to industry participants the Mingenew meeting will now be conducted as a TAB fixture by the Geraldton Turf Club on the scheduled date of Saturday 5 April 2008. The race programme and stakes levels for the meeting will remain unchanged.
“Whilst the Mingenew Turf Club committee and community are disappointed at having to transfer the meeting, we could not push on and risk the meeting being cancelled” said Carol Fleay, Mingenew Turf Club Secretary.
“The Committee felt it important that Owners and Trainers are provided the opportunity to race and the stake money committed for the meeting is paid to the industry. The Shire of Mingenew has put in a sizeable amount of money to resurface the home straight, however, after two years of drought in the region two inches of rain fell within an hour causing major flooding to the entire town, including the race course.”
“The Mingenew Turf Club, Shire of Mingenew and community have worked together to build a new administration and bar building costing over $140,000. The Mingenew Turf Club and community is committed to racing returning in 2009.”
