Ascot will make racing history this year when it becomes the first racecourse in the world to stage a Group One race worth at least $1,000,000 on three consecutive Saturdays.
Perth Racing, in conjunction with Racing and Wagering Western Australia, today announced the reprogramming of WA’s three Group One races, with the Winterbottom Stakes moving to its own day after being part of the same meeting as the Railway Stakes in previous years.
The Railway Stakes, Perth’s oldest Group One race, will take place on Saturday 19 November
The Winterbottom Stakes, Australia’s last Group One sprint of the year, will take place on Saturday 26 November
The Kingston Town Classic, the southern hemisphere’s richest Group One 1,800 metres event, will take place on Saturday 3 December
“We’re going from having one super Saturday to three super Saturdays,” said Neil Pinner, Chairman of Perth Racing.
“Australia’s favourite sprinter, globetrotting champion Buffering, has taken out two of the last three editions of the Winterbottom Stakes and the race has an international profile so we’re confident it will thrive separate from the Railway Stakes.
“Other racecourses around the globe, including Doomben, Morphettville and Randwick in Australia, host Group One races on back-to-back-to-back Saturdays but Ascot in Perth will be the first at which each of the main events will boast at least $1,000,000 in prizemoney.
“Our Group One race program revamp is part of our commitment to create iconic events that bring people together in Perth to share unique racing and non-racing social experiences.”
