Bond team launch dual attack on Derby
Owner-trainers Greg and Skye Bond will hope for a change in luck at Gloucester Park on Friday night, after suffering a setback which saw boom filly Dodolicious miss last week’s heats of the Victorian Oaks.
The Bond team were meant to send the three-year-old to Melton last week for the heats of the Group 1 feature, but the filly was left stranded in Perth, with no flights to Melbourne.
Skye Bond said the filly deserved her chance to take on the colts and geldings in the Derby.
“With Dodolicious, it didn’t quite work out going to Melbourne, but she is fit and ready to go, and I thought on what she has done she probably deserves a go at a race like this,” she said.
“She is good to go, and we are really happy with her.”
The Bonds will also be represented by El Jacko in the feature event, a horse Skye Bond said was still learning, but was capable of performing at the highest level.
“He’s a really nice horse,” she said.
“We’ve been really happy with his work in the last couple of weeks and it’s a good draw too.
“It’s good to have the two runners in the Group race.
“If they get a nice run and the gaps open up they will be right in it.”
This year’s Derby looks set to be one of the best in recent years, and was made all the more intriguing when some of the more fancied horses drew wide in Tuesday’s barrier draw.
The race has attracted interest from the dominant New Zealand combination Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen, with Let’s Chase The Dream the punters elect after a dominant win in the WA Derby Prelude.
