Community TAB and WA Racing Industry fundraise for WIRES Emergency Fund
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA)’s Community TAB program held a fundraising initiative over the weekend to assist with the hundreds of millions of animals impacted by the eastern states bushfires.
Community TAB donated $500 every time a horse or greyhound wearing the number one rug won at a Western Australian city class race meeting.
Six races won by horses/greyhounds wearing the number 1 rug resulted in $3,000 worth of donations from Community TAB to the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES) Emergency Fund, and Community TAB proudly decided to double this contribution bringing the total donated to $6,000.
As well as this, generous donations from the racing industry brought the total fundraising efforts to $7,760.
All proceeds received from the fundraising went to the WIRES, Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation. During December alone, WIRES received over 20,000 emergency calls with volunteers attending over 3,300 rescues as a result of the bushfires. The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have been affected since bushfires in NSW started in September 2019, with certain species of animals at risk of extinction.
