Community TAB to Donate to WIRES Emergency Fund
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA)’s Community TAB program will be launching a fundraising initiative over the weekend to assist with the hundreds of millions of animals impacted by the eastern states bushfires.
Community TAB will be donating $500 every time a horse or greyhound wearing the number one rug wins at a Western Australian city class race meeting.
All proceeds received from the fundraising will go to the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES), Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organisation. During December alone, WIRES received over 20,000 emergency calls with volunteers attending over 3,300 rescues as a result of the bushfires.
The University of Sydney estimates that 480 million animals have been affected since bushfires in NSW started in September 2019, with certain species of animals at risk of extinction.
Fundraising will take place during the following race meetings across the weekend:
- Gloucester Park – Friday 10 January 2020
- Pinjarra Park – Saturday 11 January 2020 (Pinjarra will be hosting Saturday’s metropolitan race meeting)
- Greyhounds WA Cannington – Saturday 11 January 2020
A GoFundMe page has been set up for the weekend’s fundraising efforts to allow for others to take part in the initiative and will be open until Sunday 12 January 2020.
“It is heartbreaking to see the devastation that the bushfires have caused across the country including our own State,” said RWWA CEO Richard Burt.
“This weekend’s fundraising efforts will provide an opportunity for the Western Australian racing industry to rally together to provide support to the many animals that are currently suffering and facing a major crisis.”
“I encourage our race clubs and industry participants to get behind this cause or any other initiative that is providing much needed assistance to those who need it most.”
