Digby Beacham’s Magic Millions Preview
Digby Beacham runs the rule over a dozen lots that are certain to command plenty of interest at this year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.
Lot 15 — Star Witness x Prime Knockout colt (Scenic Lodge): A powerful individual who looks like he has the capacity to run early and then develop into a lovely miler. Is a half-relation to Ascot 1000 Guineas winner and WA Derby runner-up Like A Butterfly. You won’t miss him when he enters the ring.
Lot 29 — Russian Revolution x Samovare filly (Amelia Park): The stallion had the sale-topper here 12 months ago and his first-season progeny have performed particularly well. As for Samovare, she needs no introduction. A Group-winning daughter of Savabeel, she is the half-sister to Tiger Of Malay and Samizdat. Lovely filly who could well be top of the pops.
Lot 56 — Snippetson x Top Show colt (Western Breeders): Appears one of the colts of the sale. By a proven stallion here in WA out of a good-producing mare, who has already left us Brooklyn Pier and Story Book. Physically mature for a late foal and catches the eye every time you see him.
Lot 76 — Nicconi x Amelia’s Love filly (Amelia Park): If you are seeking a mature filly from a high-class stallion out of a mare who is doing the job, coupled with an active family, look no further. This girl stands over ground, has a lovely temperament and is a half-relation to Speed Lover, a last-start Adelaide winner, and the unraced two-year-old Jamaican Rumba, a recent trial winner over east.
Lot 88 — Awesome Rock x Bonny Be Good filly (Gold Front Thoroughbreds): Gold Front are understandably excited to offer this filly by their resident stallion Awesome Rock, who has done a great job to date. This filly is out of a sister to Tellem We’re Comin, a multiple black-type winner. She is not a pre-Christmas two-year-old, but your patience will be rewarded.
Lot 89 — War Chant x Brocky’s Ace colt (Ruby Racing): Any time you offer a half-brother to the likes of Quilista and Red Can Man, you are entitled to be genuinely excited. The mare has been a ripper and the stallion has been an overwhelming success Down Under. Expect the bidding on this colt to be very strong. He is a lovely yearling.
Lot 92 — Playing God x Buhn Lert colt (Willaview Park): Ex Sport Man, this colt’s older brother, cost $40,000. He went on to claim the Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (1200m) and the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m). It’s fair to assume this bloke, who has still got some growing to do, is going to sell for considerably more than his sibling.
Lot 99 — Safeguard x Castle Queen filly (Mogumber Park): If only all first living foals were like this one. A powerful individual who has Initial Plate written all over her. The mum is a half-sister to both Specialism and Royal Strata and the stallion is coming off an excellent spring. Importantly, this is a good female’s family.
Lot 118 — Magnus x Dreamalong filly (Scenic Lodge): Jeremy Smith and his team offer two Magnus fillies, with perhaps this one just getting the nod over the other (lot 135). She has all the attributes you are looking for in an early-going juvenile and has a lovely page. The Magnus stock get better with age and are effective in all conditions. She will be popular.
Lot 154 — Trapeze Artist x Kiss Bang Love colt (Willow Dale Farm): It will be a shock if this colt isn’t one of the top lots of the sale. By a multiple Group 1-winning sprinter out of a Group-winning juvenile, he has the makings of a quality two-year-old. Has real presence and could be the type that attracts buyers from the east coast.
Lot 156 — Capitalist x La Renaissance colt (Willow Dale Farm): Timing is everything when it comes to yearling sales. Entering the Gold Coast, the progeny of Capitalist weren’t exactly setting the world on fire. Since then however, he has had two Group winners and a Listed winner. They are very much in demand again, with this colt likely to be well sought after.
Lot 236 — So Secret x Tribulot filly (Rangeview Stud): The full sister to Karrakatta Plate winner Hobart Jones and proven performer Agent Kensington, this girl will make her presence felt on day two. Big and strong, she is from a mare who has done an excellent job and the cross clearly works.
The Perth Magic Millions sale gets underway at 1pm on Tuesday.
