Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) has today announced renowned veterinarian and animal welfare advocate, Dr Garnett Hall, as the 2019 Western Australian ambassador for the GAP National Adoption Day, on Sunday 28 April.
Dr Hall is a leading and well-respected Western Australian veterinarian, who in 2017 opened West Coast Vets with his brother Dr Max Hall. He also has a regular segment with Channel Nine News discussing veterinarian topics, and is a member of the University of WA’s Animal Ethics Committee and the Australian Veterinary Association (WA) Committee.
With his extensive experience in working with greyhounds, and having previously owned one himself, Dr Halls was thrilled to be part of the nation-wide event as he believes greyhounds truly do make the perfect pet.
“I am honoured to be the Western Australian ambassador for the GAP National Adoption Day. Greyhounds are gentle, sweet natured dogs who I often describe as the world’s fastest couch potatoes, as contrary to popular belief, they need very little exercising and can sleep for up to 23 hours a day,” said Dr Hall.
“Greyhounds also make fantastic pets because they are very adaptable and are suited to a variety of environments including large properties, suburban homes, units and even apartments.”
RWWA’s CEO Richard Burt was pleased to welcome Dr Hall as this year’s ambassador and said that the greyhound adoption day is a great opportunity to showcase the breed.
“RWWA is proud to be part of this nation-wide initiative, which sees all governing bodies come together in an effort to really shine a light on greyhounds as pets, and we are grateful to have Dr Hall on board to help further spread this message,” said Mr Burt.
The Minister for Racing and Gaming, the Hon. Paul Papalia MLA, said the initiative is an example of how the racing industry is ensuring a greater commitment to the welfare of its greyhounds.
“The Western Australian racing industry is continuing to lead the way in greyhound welfare and we are committed to ensuring that the best levels of care are given to greyhounds both during and post-racing,” said Minister.
“The adoption day is an ideal opportunity to showcase the State’s highly successful rehoming program and quality facilities.”
Those looking to adopt a greyhound at the GAP National Adoption Day must pre-register prior to attending via the GAP website, www.greyhoundaspets.com.au.
