Ferguson Aiming For The Stars With Trotters Cup Winner
Trainer Terry Ferguson will explore the possibility of sending yesterday’s STAWA Trotters Cup (2631m) winner Line The Starzz to the east coast for the Vicbred Super Series Final later this year.
The four-year-old scored an impressive 1.2m win over race favourite Dark Secret in yesterday’s $8,000 event at Pinjarra and took her record to three wins from 11 starts.
The mare started her career in May last year and scored her first win at the corresponding WA Day program at Pinjarra last year.
Ferguson said Line The Starzzz had been a work in progress over her short career to date.
“She went well,” Ferguson told RWWA Harness.
“I expected her to go close but she is a mare that has a bit of an attitude problem.
“She wasn’t bustled out by Chris Lewis yesterday and she’s not really a mare you can bustle along.
“She’s still on a learning curve but she’s been able to match a couple of the nice ones around.”
Ferguson said a trip east was on the cards for the mare, provided he could get a flight.
“It was only a week ago I realised she was eligible for it,” he said.
“After yesterday’s win I thought that might be in the offering.
“A lot will depend on being able to get her over there as well.”
Meanwhile, WA Oaks winner Sports Package will line up in a three-year-old fillies event at Gloucester Park this Friday night in what shapes up to be one of the more intriguing events on the card.
Sports Package hasn’t run since she caused a minor upset in the Group 1 feature at Gloucester Park last month.
Double Expresso, Blockjorg, Star Fromthepalace, Run For Mercy and Suing You are all among the 12 acceptances for the event, which will serve as a key lead up to the 3YO Westbred Fillies Classic on June 19.
Ferguson said he was pleased with Sports Package ahead of her return to the track but said she would have to be near her best to win from barrier eight.
“She’s going to draw awkwardly with the preferential barrier draw, as will Double Expresso,” he said.
“She might need another run or two after Friday night to be cherry ripe for the Westbred.
“I was in two minds whether to run her as it is a good field.
“She worked well this morning though and I thought we may as well leave her in.”
