GREYHOUND
Simon Hailey is a greyhound racing enthusiast, regularly attending Cannington to watch his favourite dog’s race, and it was here that he first learned about adopting a greyhound as a pet.
“Greyhounds as Pets (GAP) were at the track to promote the national adoption day. I had heard greyhounds make awesome pets and we love going to watch them race at the track, so I knew I wanted to adopt one that had raced,” said Simon.
In 2018, Simon and his friends decided to attend the inaugural GAP National Adoption Day and it was a greyhound named Venom who caught their eye.
“We knew we wanted Venom as soon as we saw him at the adoption day, he was this big, chilled out dude who was trying to get inside a bucket of water.”
Venom, who’s racing name was Prancing Parker, had quite a successful career on the track winning over $5000, and now has transitioned into the perfect pet.
“Retiring at five years of age he was the largest male available at the adoption day, but his looks are deceiving, he is an incredibly loving dog always happy to see me when I get home.”
Venom is great to take out and about and is especially good with friend’s kids and other dogs.
“We take him to the dog wash and to greyhound meet up days, people are cautious at first but then they see how well behaved he is and they are very interested to learn more about him.”
“A bonus for adopting a retired greyhound who has raced is that he has seen it all, nothing fazes him and he takes it all in his stride.”
Simon had recently started dating girlfriend Abby when he adopted Venom a year ago. Abbey had always considered herself not really a dog person, but now living with Simon and Venom, she absolutely adores him.
“I recommend adopting a greyhound to everyone, Abby and I are even looking at getting our second greyhound to add to the family.”
The GAP National Adoption Day will once again be held at the Greyhound as Pet’s Southern River Facility on Sunday 28 April. If you are interested in adopting a greyhound at the event pre-register via the GAP website, www.greyhoundaspets.com.au.
