Go for Team Teal at the trots
The winning colour in harness racing is teal as leading reinswomen take up the challenge to beat cancer.
The Team Teal campaign to support ovarian cancer research runs from 1 February to 15 March 2022 and Western Australian ambassadors Deni Roberts and Emily Suvaljko are looking forward to racing in teal and notching up as many victories as possible.
For the sixth consecutive year, Racing and Wagering Western Australia and The Trots WA are the main sponsors of the WA team, pledging $15,000 to the cause.
“It means a great deal to me to be a part of Team Teal and I feel grateful for the opportunity to raise awareness and much-needed funds for ovarian cancer research,” Deni said.
“Being able to make a difference to the lives of women suffering from this disease is important to me.”
Emily aims to improve on last year’s tally, with more teal-wearing women drivers crossing the finish line first on local race tracks.
“Following 30 collective wins last year, I hope to build on that in the 2022 campaign and get more people involved,” she said.
“I feel privileged to be chosen as an ambassador for such a great cause. It brings everyone together to help scientists find a solution in curing ovarian cancer.”
Chief Racing Officer Charlotte Mills said not only women drivers but clerks on the course would be wearing teal in the weeks ahead.
“It’s great to see so many women in the harness racing community join the campaign and wear teal with pride,” she said.
“We’re glad to support the cause to help women live longer and better.”
In 2021, WA’s Team Teal raised more than $13,000 during the six-week fundraising campaign.
