Perfect Major Will Only Get Better: Voak
Leading reinsman Chris Voak is confident Perfect Major has what it takes to be a leading contender in next year’s summer feature races, following his win in the Members Sprint (1730m) at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Perfect Major sat in the breeze outside Jack Farthing in Friday night’s $25,000 and held off a late surge from Balcatherine and stablemate Stroke Of Luck in the closing stages.
The five-year-old finished eighth and fifth in the Fremantle Cup and WA Pacing Cup respectively last year and Voak said he was confident he would be much better placed 12 months on.
“It was his first campaign in the summer carnival and basically he went from a metro maiden to an open class horse in five starts,” Voak said.
“Then he went in the Pacing Cup and wilted to run fifth but that was only his fourth or fifth run over the 2500.
“He will be a far better horse this campaign.
“I have him as a real player come the end of the year.”
Voak said he felt the Ross Olivieri-trained Perfect Major was the best Free-For-All class horse at the moment but was looking forward to seeing how he stacked up against Chicago Bull, who is set to return to the track as soon as this week.
Chicago Bull has been nominated for this week’s FFA, in what could be just his second start since the WA Pacing Cup last December.
Trainer Gary Hall Snr indicated Chicago Bull would race throughout the winter in the build up to another tilt at the Cups.
Another Olivieri-trained pacer and Bunbury Cup winner Major Times has also been nominated for this week’s FFA event.
This Friday’s card also features the Diamond Classic for the three-year-old fillies and the Pearl Classic for the three-year-old colts and geldings.
