The Peters Stakes is the last opportunity to gain entry into WA racing’s premier event: the Group 1 $1 million Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 21.
The Peters Stakes was first run in 1905 and won by Rustaff. The race has carried Listed status from 1979 until 1985 and Group 3 level since 1986.
It has been run over 1200 metres from 1905 to 1978, 1400 metres from 1979 to 1997 and 1500m since 2003, except in 2003, when it was staged over 1600m.
The race was previously known as the WATC Stakes and WATC Plate. It was run at Belmont in 2003 and not held between 1941-1944 and 1958 and 1959.
