Punters pick three winners as $10,000 raised for charity

More than $10,000 was raised for charities at the Marble Bar races earlier this month, with punters digging deep not only to place a bet but to support the groups.
Three organisations were the recipients this year — the Isolated Children’s Parents Association Pilbara branch, the Marble Bar Progress Association and WA Police Legacy.
Race club secretary Cheryl Fowler said it was a stellar effort by all volunteers, who held stalls and raffles as part of the fundraising.
She said the organisations were all worthy of the donations.
“The Isolated Children’s Parents Association have worked so hard … They make sure the kids don’t miss out and make sure the kids have got all their resources,” she said.
“Their fundraising is going towards a conference they’ve got in Perth towards the end of the year.
“Police Legacy is there for the families of deceased police personnel, (and) the Progress Association, they fundraise for the town’s Christmas party for all the kids in town and the surrounding areas.
“That way the kids don’t miss out just because they might be in a environment that hasn’t got the funds to give them a bit of Christmas cheer.
“So I think it’s great.”
As part of the fundraising, Community TAB also jumped on board and matched funds raised dollar for dollar up to $2000, bringing the total above $10,000.
Racing and Wagering WA chairman Jeff Ovens said Community TAB was excited to continue the program for a second year to keep highlighting the strong connection race clubs had with the communities in which they operated.
