WA Country Cups caught up with Ms Scott to talk about country racing and racing fashion, as well as the upcoming Final, here is what she had to say:
1. What do you love about country racing?
What I love about country racing is going along to race meet and having the opportunity to catch up with friends that otherwise wouldn’t get to see because of our busy lives, there’s always so many people I know and everyone is dressed up and ready to have a great time. There has been many occasions my husband and I have gone to put a bet on and we end up chatting to the old guys at the counter about the horses and getting tips and most often old stories. It’s country racing at its best.
2. How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories?
I have a fond memory of going to the races with my boyfriend (now husband ) 20 years ago. It was my very first race day so I really didn’t know what to expect, Brett had bought me a new dress and off I went feeling a million dollars. I remember falling in love with the races that day and haven’t missed a Kalgoorlie race round since. A highlight for me to date would be when a few friends and I decided to do a day trip to Leonora for a race meet, it’s a 2.5 hour drive, we pulled up at the truck stop when we arrived and got changed into our beautiful dresses and head wear in the toilets and off we went. Leonora put on a spectacular day, I was so proud to stand next to my daughter in the FOTF catwalk and compete with her, it was getting towards the end of the day and they still hadn’t announced the winners. At that point I said it didn’t matter if any of us place because we’ve such a great time, but to hear my name get called felt so surreal and I got to share that with my daughter and the greatest bunch of ladies you could possibly meet.
3. Why do you enter Fashions on the Field?
After always being disappointed when trying to find the perfect outfit but never having luck because of my non average body shape, I soon taught myself to design and sew my own race-wear. I entered FOTF to show how proud I was of my creation and have always been lucky enough and honoured to place in top 10. I’ve been blown away by how incredibly uplifting the other woman are in the FOTF, something that came to my realisation recently is that we are not up there to compete against each other, we are all there as beautiful, strong, inspiring woman competing next to each other. There really is such a thing as the sisterhood and it stands strong in our racing community.
4. Describe your style?
I would describe my style as very vibrant, polished and unique. I love structure and think the finishing touches such as hair and makeup are also an important part of completing a look.
5. What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field?
I think it’s important to use social media to our best advantage, follow your favourite designers and try to keep up with what’s happening in the racing fashion world. Ask questions! There are so many amazing Instagram and Facebook groups dedicated to women who love racing fashion. I know what it feels like to be two weeks from a race day and can’t decide which bag to use and I can’t decide on shoes or the big one, do I even like this outfit anymore. Ask the question, these ladies want to help and have the same love for fashion as you do, so get amongst it. But whatever your style and whatever you choose to wear, it’s most important to have confidence in what you’ve pieced together, own that outfit and wear it with pride. That will shine brighter than any handbag or matching shoes will. If you place then congrats, it’s a huge honour but if you don’t, then kick your heels together and enjoy the rest of your race day, you never know what the judges are looking for that day so be happy for the girl that did win because she’s feeling pretty fantastic right at that moment.
6. What are some of your favourite things about the Goldfields Region?
I know it’s cliché and most of us have answered this question the same but it’s what makes all regional communities so incredible and that’s the people. The Goldfields is very remote and most people come for the work, leaving behind family. A lot of woman have to raise their kids without family close by, your friends quickly become your family. They say it takes a community to raise a child and I couldn’t have done it without the love and support of my friends and the community. I’ve been so overwhelmed and humbled by the support of Kalgoorlie and actually across Australia throughout this voting process, people I don’t even know sending me messages of well wishes and voting and sharing and getting their friends to vote and writing beautiful comments on my photos, I never realised how powerful a community could be and I’m so lucky to be part of it.
7. What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the Wildcard semi-final?
Argh I’m so excited to be part of this experience, I can’t wait to meet and become friends with all the other contestants. I’ve been competing in FOTF for approx 6 years and seeing ladies win and get the sash and head of the big smoke to enjoy it further I was so excited for them and I still can’t believe I’m going.
