Refuge to benefit from funding boost
6 January, 2016
COMMUNITY TAB and Greyhounds WA Mandurah will join forces to raise much-needed funds for Pat Thomas House at the annual Mandurah Cup on January 8.
This initiative is part of Community TAB’s new program that will see it partner with every race club in WA to raise funds for a local not-for- profit organisation.
Community TAB has agreed to match dollar for dollar all funds raised at the Mandurah Cup up to $5000.
Racing and Wagering WA chair- man Jeff Ovens said progressive partnerships like these were an example of the strong connection race clubs have with the communi- ties in which they operate.
“Race clubs across WA play an important role in their community contributing both economically and socially,” he said.
“Community TAB is proud to part- ner with the clubs to ensure this pos- itive connection is highlighted and play our own part in giving back to the community.
“Our donation to Pat Thomas House Inc is one of more than 50 community organisations that will be supported as part of Community TAB’s $150 million contribution to the WA community this year.”
Greyhounds WA Mandurah is one of many racing clubs around WA putting its hand up to fundraise for a local community group and help grow the financial and social support for the community.
Greyhounds WA marketing officer Kelly Frampton said they will also be making a donation to the organisa- tion to add to the fundraising.
“Fundraising will be happening on the night through gold coin donation entry with all gate takings to be donated, as well as a donation to be made by Greyhounds WA,” Ms Frampton said.
Pat Thomas House executive officer Margaret Adams said the Community TAB program with WA race clubs was beneficial to not-for- profit charity groups that service the WA community.
“Pat Thomas House is a crisis accommodation service that assists women and their children who are fleeing from family and domestic violence, and our service includes support groups, shelter and post cri- sis support,” Ms Adams said.
“The wider community is affected with family and domestic violence with two in three women experienc- ing it in some form whether it be they themselves who experience it or know someone who has.
“Family and domestic violence has a cost to the community by way of declined police resources, pressure on health services, pressure and demand on crisis accommodation services and increased mental health issues.”
All funds raised on the day and then matched by Community TAB will go to Pat Thomas House for children’s services-counselling, extra resources, activities and programs.
