RWWA Announces 2020 WA Greyhound of the Year Contenders
Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) is pleased to announce the following three greyhounds
(in alphabetical order) as the final contenders for the 2020 WA Greyhound of the Year Title – FLAKE
MONELLI, ROCKSTAR PATRIOT and TOMMY SHELBY.
Owned and Trained by David Hobby, FLAKE MONELLI raced 35 times during 2020 for 21 wins and nine
placings for a total of $162,641 in stakes.
FLAKE MONELLI dominated the staying ranks throughout the year and at one stage won nine races in a
row.
Her biggest successes came in the Mandurah Middle Distance Challenge and the WA Distance
Championship. FLAKE MONELLI also set new track records over the 600m and 647m distances during
the season.
ROCKSTAR PATRIOT raced 21 times during 2020, for four wins and eleven placings for a total of
$133,271 in stakes.
Trained by Paul Stuart, ROCKSTAR PATRIOT’s biggest win during the season was the Group 1 Galaxy.
The Steve Withers-trained TOMMY SHELBY raced 30 times during 2020, for 19 wins and eight placings
for a total of $383,540 in stakes.
TOMMY SHELBY may have developed a cult following off the track but it is his performance on the track
that has done all the talking.
His feature wins for 2020 were the Kanyana Cup, Sandi’s Me Mum Memorial, Group 3 Perth Cup
Consolation, WA Sprint Championship, Spring Gift and Group 1 Hobart Thousand.
TOMMY SHELBY also placed in the Group 1 Vic Peters, Million Dollar Chase and Group 1 Melbourne
Cup.
Acknowledgment must also be given to MERMAID MONELLI and ZACK MONELLI, who were both
closely considered by the voting panel after their tremendous deeds on the track in 2020.
RWWA General Manager Racing Charlotte Mills said that this year’s contenders presented a strong field
and welcomed the opportunity to recognise their achievements over the past year.
“The awards are a great opportunity to come together as an industry to celebrate what has been an
unprecedented but successful year in greyhound racing,” Charlotte said.
“All contenders have produced outstanding performances and we look forward to celebrating their
achievements.”
The winner will be announced at the Greyhound of the Year Awards, which will take place on Sunday, 14 March 2021.
