Sixty Seconds With… Amy Evans

Amy is a light hearted eighteen year old animal lover, born with a genetic condition called Nemaline Myopathy (NM). NM is a disability that results in Amy having weak muscles and being wheelchair bound. Amy has a twin sister that also has the same condition.
Having NM however has not stopped Amy from living life to the fullest. The super intelligent and passionate young lady has excelled in her school work and is currently studying Drafting at Central Tafe. Her goal is to own a Drafting Business specialising in disability access.
Amy is an avid racing fan and has a great passion for the industry, she is a part owner of five racehorses. Amy is very committed to helping others and has come up with a concept whereby racehorse owners donate a small percentage of their winnings to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT RACING?
I love everything about horse racing. The adrenaline rush when your horse runs is amazing. There is nothing like watching a horse you own running in a race. I also love the community that racing has created and how welcoming and friendly everyone is. I have made many friends through horse racing. I met Rob Humphryson and we are now part owners in Ace’s Wish.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN RACING?
My interest in horse racing came as a result of our family trying each year to select the winner of the Melbourne Cup, Mum and Dad placed a $10 bet each year on a horse of our choice. When I was six I picked On A Jeune to win the Melbourne Cup and he came second. My sister and I started having success picking winners and my dream was of one day hopefully getting involved in horse racing as an owner. A friend of a friend owned horses through Impressive Racing so when I was sixteen I contacted them and it went from there. Later I went to the farm and picked out Master Magician, while he was still a yearling. I was hooked from there. I have since helped to name horses for various owners. I now have a small ownership in five horses.
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE HORSE AND WHY?
My favourite horse is Rogan Josh because he is originally from Perth and he is also a Melbourne Cup winner. Winning the Melbourne Cup is a dream of mine and a special highlight for me this year was holding the 2016 Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Of all the horses I’m involved in I don’t have a favourite because that would be like a parent picking a favourite child. However, the horses that are special to me are Master Magician because he was the first race horse that I picked from the paddock myself, Mambokadzi because she was my first winner and Ace’s Wish because she was the first horse that became involved in ACE It Racing.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE WITHIN THE RACING INDUSTRY?
I admire everyone because they are such hard workers, they start so early in the morning (something I could never do). The jockeys and trainers are so professional and committed and they have a great love and respect of horses.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PAST TIMES OUTSIDE OF RACING?
I like watching the tennis and Monster Jam trucks. However I spend most of my time studying, to be a house designer/draftsman and access consultant. I also have a friendly race horse tipping competition with Rob Humphryson (one horse per race for the metro Perth races on Saturday) which I have hours of fun with!
WHERE IN THE WORLD YOU LIKE TO TRAVEL TO?
I would like to do a world trip to visit all of the major race tracks including the Melbourne Cup, Royal Ascot, the Triple Crown races in America, and the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.
IF YOU COULD HAVE 5 PEOPLE OVER FOR DINNER WHO WOULD IT BE?
Katy Perry, Gai Waterhouse, Ellen DeGeneres, Novak Djokovic and Michelle Payne
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN IN RACING IN THE FUTURE?
I would love to see more people get involved in racing, especially younger people. I would like to see the traditions of horse racing, such as dressing up for race meetings continued because I believe this is an element that makes racing so special.
