Staeck Stakes His Claim

Daniel Staeck has been missing from the winners circle for quite some time now.
The 1999 champion apprentice is due to make his comeback to race riding tomorrow at Mount Barker after nearly two years out of the saddle.
With over 700 winners under his belt, Staeck was one of WA’s most talented riders, until a drug habit saw it all come crashing down.
Staeck spoke to TABradio’s The Sports Daily about the nature of his past addiction;
“It began that way (controlled) but just prior to my suspensions and disqualifications it got the better of me, it was dark times but I’m lucky enough to say I’m bigger and stronger than that now.”
During his absence, Staeck took the opportunity to return to school to obtain his year 11 and 12 tertiary qualifications. A challenge that has improved his mental strength.
Staeck has booked five rides in tomorrow’s seven race card. He commented on his eagerness to make a return;
“I’m healthy and I’m as physically fit as I can be without a race ride. I feel fantastic mentally and body wise… I’m hungrier than most and I think that might play a part.
“I’m not out to break any records, just to make the very best of every opportunity that I get.
“When you have some success at something and you’re good at what you do, after some time you miss it. I’m very much looking forward to tomorrow.”
Staeck is set to go head to head against step-son Fred W. Kersley who rode his first winner last weekend in Esperance.
With titles such as the 2012 Railway Stakes, 2003 WA Derby, 2001 Karrakatta and the 2001 T J Smith Classic to his name, Staeck is expected to make a slash upon his re-entry to race riding.
