Swift Platinum To Chase More Cup Success
Peter Bamford says Swift Platinum will continue to chase feature provincial and country staying races after scoring a fighting Broome Cup (2200m) victory on Saturday.
“I’m heading back on Thursday and stopping off at Newman,” Bamford told Tabradio.
“I wasn’t going to nominate him, but I might just to see what weight he gets for the Newman Cup.
“It seems a bit silly to drive past and not even think about putting him in.
“He has pulled up extremely well, but the horse is headed to Kalgoorlie.
“I would probably go first-up into the Kalgoorlie Cup.”
Swift Platinum’s Broome Cup success followed earlier wins in the Harding Cup (1400m) and the Roebourne Cup (2200m) where he led and demolished his rivals by eight lengths.
In an otherwise stellar campaign, Swift Platinum suffered his only loss for Bamford when he ran unplaced as the odds on favourite in the Port Hedland Cup (2200m) a fortnight earlier.
Bamford said with weight relief and a change of tactics he was confident Swift Platinum would rebound strongly in the Broome Cup.
“He did jump up a fair bit in weight and got 3kg for winning the Roebourne Cup.
“I decided to try and sit him back and nurse him because of the weight.
“I don’t know why, but I brought myself undone.”
Swift Platinum, perfectly ridden by Peta Edwards, led soon after the start and held out a brave Boys Getaround Him by ¾ of a length in the Broome Cup.
Bamford said the race played out as planned.
“I said to Peta to be positive and make sure she got across before the corner,” Bamford said.
“Make them know that he was there.
“I was confident because he has always given a great kick in his other races.
“In Roebourne he ran away from them and I was confident he would kick on.”
Bamford, who survived throat cancer several years ago, said the past few months with Swift Platinum has been like a dream.
Bought for $6000, Swift Platinum has now pocketed close to $130,000 in prizemoney after four wins from five starts for the Muchea trainer.
“It was huge and it’s always great to win a race like the Broome Cup,” Bamford said.
“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the last couple of days.
“It’s almost a surreal feeling at the moment.
“It still hasn’t quite sunk in.”
The Newman Cup (2100m) is run this Saturday and the Kalgoorlie Cup (2200m) on October 5.
