Senator Monelli will be out to emulate superstar greyhound Miata after he snatched state pride in the WA Distance Championship (647m) at Mandurah on Saturday.
Prepared by David Hobby, the victory earned the son of Barcia Bale and Sharon Monelli a well-deserved berth in the next fortnight’s National final in Adelaide.
To the delight of favourite punters Senator Monelli never looked in danger and defeated Serena Flyer by almost six lengths in a respectable time of 36.76sec.
Senator Monelli, who improved his record to 15 wins from 29 starts, is looking to become the first WA chaser to win the National Distance Championship since Miata’s triumph at Hobart four years ago.
Joining Senator Monelli on the flight to Adelaide for the August 27 showdown in the National Sprint Championship is Times Square, who will carry state pride after taking out the WA Sprint Championship.
The daughter of Spiral Nikita and West On Bluebird had to pull out all stops in the run to the post, but once balanced and into the clear she produced a strong finish, scoring by just under a length from Thunder Rama.
Senator Monelli, who ran 27.55sec., is raced by trainer Chris Halse in combination with partner, Linda Britton. Britton, a Western Australian Racing Hall Of Fame inductee, has won the WA Sprint Championship a record nine times since Reggemite was successful in 1998.
