Tommy The Toast Of The Town
WA Greyhound racing’s Poster Boy Tommy Shelby is again the talk of the town as he heads to Cannington for tonight’s WA Bred Championship Final over 520 metres.
The Steve Wither’s trained sprinter has been in a rich vein of form winning 7 of his last 8 starts with his only defeat in that period when a gallant second in the Group 1 Vic Peters Final at Wentworth Park behind Playlist in July.
Since then Tommy has returned home to WA and won six on the bounce, all in best of night times.
Tonight he exits box one with Star Book in box two and Mermaid Monelli in box three, both who like to use a bit of the track in the early stages of their races.
Quite simply he looks mapped to perfection.
Trainer Steve Withers is happy with his charge heading in to tonight’s feature event.
“His work has been first class and he heads to the track a happy and healthy dog.” Withers said.
“There is potential for Mermaid Monelli to lead him but hopefully he can tuck in behind and navigate his way in to clear air in the run.” Withers added.
Tommy Shelby stifles the fixed odds betting with TABtouch firming from $1.30 the win in to $1.24.
The David Hobby trained Redcap Monelli was an eye-catching performance in his heat when flooding home to finish runner up beaten 5.75 lengths behind Tommy Shelby and he may well again be finishing on in to a place at odds.
If all goes to plan for Tommy tonight he will keep ticking over until he heads across to NSW for the Million Dollar Chase series.
Depending upon the results from semi final night of the Million Dollar Chase Tommy could either return home for a crack at the All Stars or even head to Victoria for some of their upcoming features.
“It is all up in the air a little bit and it all comes down to how Tommy goes in the Million Dollar Chase semi-finals.” Withers said.
“There is potential for a stint in Victoria for a series like the Melbourne Cup but we will have to wait and see how he comes through his races in the next little bit.” Withers concluded.
Tommy has generously offered to buy a drink for his fans that head up to the Box One Restaurant tonight at Cannington and once again pledge their support.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support he has had and we just wanted to put on a few drinks to thank everyone for their support.” Withers said.
On a fairly tricky night for specials my best bets are race 2 number 1 So Tough each way, race 9 number 8 More Deductions and race 10 number 6 Van Buren.
