Yangery-based trainer Jarrod McLean and Perth owner Geoff Evans have had a change of heart and in a major boost for the Ascot carnival they have elected to extend Trap For Fool’s spring and summer campaign.
Fresh from a stirring maiden Group 1 triumph in Saturday’s Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington, Trap For Fools will run in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on December 8.
“The original thought was to send him for a spell and target next year’s Australian Cup (2000m) in the autumn,” McLean said.
“But Geoff was keen for him to come back home and race him in the Kingston Town as a preferred option.
“He thinks everything went right in the Mackinnon and it just might be difficult to replicate it in the Australian Cup.
“He will race back home in the Kingston Town and then go for a spell and come back for next year’s Cox Plate (2040m).
“The Australian Cup has not been entirely ruled out, but we will make that decision after he runs in Perth.
“He’s had a quiet week since the weekend, but is going well and it’s too good an opportunity not to try for another Group 1.”
Trap For Fools transferred to McLean after posting 10 wins, including six in succession and five placings for Lindsey Smith between 2016 and 2018.
Under his guidance the son of Poet’s Voice won the Listed Tattersall’s Cup (2100m), the Listed Towton Cup (2200m) and Listed A.T.A Stakes (2200m).
The Mackinnon Stakes victory gave McLean and Evans compensation after the Moonee Valley Racing Club Committee omitted Trap For Fools from the 2018 Cox Plate line-up.
The five-year-old has jumped to the top of the Kingston Town Classic betting market, holding $6 TABtouch favouritism over previous elect, Galaxy Star ($8).
