WA Bred Championship Takes the Spotlight
Two heats of the WA Bred Championship highlight a strong ten race program at Cannington on Saturday night.
Fresh off success in last week’s Listed Spring Gift Final, gun sprinter Tommy Shelby will be chasing his sixth straight victory when he exits box eight in the first heat (race 6).
Tommy led throughout over the 520 metres from box five in the Spring Gift final last week defeating Fernando Star by two lengths in a Best Of Night time of 29.60 seconds.
He will again resume his rivalry with Fernando Star who has drawn box one for tonight’s heat, a draw he has had 5 times for four victories.
The ultra-consistent Kiss Me Linda has to overcome an awkward draw in box five but she did win her heat of the Spring Gift a fortnight ago in impressive fashion.
The fast finishing Redcap Monelli resumes from a break in box seven and is likely to be hitting the line hard late.
In the second of the WA Bred Championship Heats Sir Monty, Star Book and Westdale Hailee will square off against the David Hobby trained trio of Mermaid Monelli, Chomp Monelli and Chimera Monelli.
Sir Monty looks beautifully positioned in box one with Mermaid Monelli and Star Book both looking to get up the track in the early stages which should give him plenty of room to power through on the rails.
Sir Monty has an excellent record from box one having had five attempts in the red for four wins.
Star stayer Flake Monelli drops back to the 520 metres in race 4 and it will be interesting to see how she performs over the shorter trip.
On a quality night of chasing my better bets are race 7 number 1 Sir Monty and race 8 number 4 Van Buren.
I am also keen on the quinella of 2 Hastie Guess and 6 Grace Ali in race 5.
