WA Country Cups recently caught up with Elizabeth Winlo, the winner of the Wheatbelt Regional Heat at the Northam Ladies Day, for the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field.
Elizabeth will be one of nine regional heat winners, who will be taking part in the WA Country Cups Fashions on the Field State Final, to be held at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 26th November.
Here’s what she had to say:
What do you love about country racing?
There’s so much to love about country racing but one of the things that stands out for me is that it’s such a community event. You’ll often see families out for the day, which is lovely and it is a great opportunity to see people from around town in a different context. It’s also a little more of a relaxed atmosphere which draws people to the track I believe.
How long have you been going to the races for and what are your favourite memories?
I’ve been going ever since I can remember. My earliest (and fondest) memories are of going to the Northam Harness Club with my late Grandfather to watch the horses and getting an ice-cream (and put a lot of losing tickets in the second chance barrel!).
Why do you enter Fashions on the Field?
There’s a couple of reasons I enter Fashions on the Field, the main one being its my only chance to really get dressed up and be somebody else for a day. Anybody who knows me, knows that 90% of the time I’m getting around in yoga pants, so I really treasure the opportunity to put an outfit together and be part of such a glamourous event.
Describe your style?
It’s harder to answer this than I thought! I think style is so fluid and has certainly changed for me over the years. I find I’m drawn to the more classic styles, structured shapes and 50’s inspired silhouettes. I think that’s what suits my shape the best.
What tips do you have for ladies entering Fashions on the Field?
The main thing I think is to just relax and enjoy the experience. I know it’s a competition, but if you put too much pressure on yourself (either with a dress that is on trend but not really “you”, a pair of fabulous shoes that cripple your feet or headwear that is uncomfortable) it will show up on stage. Know what suits your body and represents your style then look to current trends to complement it in your headwear, shoes and accessories.
What are some of your favourite things about the Wheatbelt?
I was born and raised in Northam and I have so many beautiful memories of growing up there. All of my closest friends I made in the local primary school. It’s a very relaxed way of life. One of my absolute favourite things though is the smell of spring in the Wheatbelt – I can only describe it as a combination of warm earth, grass and a hint of smoke from controlled burn-off. A bit strange I know, but I’ve never experienced it anywhere else!
What does it mean to you to be going to Ascot to compete in the Final?
It’s an incredible opportunity and I am honestly very humbled to be representing the Wheatbelt at Ascot. I’m excited but nervous at the same time – all of the women who have won the other heats have very strong outfits so I’m hoping I can do the home town proud!
