WA reinswomen win big for Ovarian Cancer Research
With 35 collective wins and support from the wider racing community, WA’s team of seven reinswomen have raised over $13,000 in support of the Team Teal campaign for Australia New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group (ANZGOG).
Organised by WomenCan, the campaign raises funds and awareness for ovarian cancer research, with Racing and Wagering Western Australia’s (RWWA) Community TAB donating $200 each time a race was won by the WA team.
The women’s triumphs on the track resulted in Community TAB donating over $7,000 to the campaign. In addition, the racing industry showed their support through donations, bringing the total amount raised to over $13,000.
Team Teal Ambassador Jocelyn Young, who secured 14 wins for the WA team, said she was thrilled with the result.
“It was fantastic to see the progression from last year, with our team surpassing last year’s effort – which was our main goal,” Ms Young said.
“Securing 14 wins for the team was great. I am lucky to have loyal trainers behind me who made it all possible, and I would like to thank the trainers who gave our team the opportunity to race, and therefore win money for the cause, for their support.”
“I really enjoyed being part of such an important campaign, and I would urge every female driver to join our team next year.”
WA’s 2020 Team Teal consisted of Maddison Brown, Deni Roberts, Tonia Stampalia, Emily Suvaljko, Jocelyn Young, Lauren Jones and Madeleine Young. To support the campaign, the WA Team Teal drivers and all female clerks on course wore teal pants or silks.
General Manager Community TAB Matthew Thomas said it has been great to see the industry rally around the team.
“It was a massive effort from the WA team this year with 10 more wins than the previous year, all to support this great cause, we are very proud to sponsor the team,” Mr Thomas said.
The WA Team Teal campaign ran from 1 February to March 15, with funds raised going towards ANZGOG’s Gynaecological Cancer Research Nurses Grant Program and the Survivors Teaching Students program.
The WomenCan Team Teal campaign is a partnership with the Harness Racing industry in Australia and New Zealand.
