Young Filly Wonderful Enough For The Slipper
Star filly Wonderful To Fly is set to tackle the colts and geldings in Friday week’s Golden Slipper (2130m) at Gloucester Park, provided she comes through this week’s Gold Bracelet (2130m) in good order.
Trainer-driver Shane Young confirmed last week’s Westbred Classic (2130m) winner will line up in this week’s $30,000 event for the fillies with an eye to running her for a fourth straight week in the Group 1 on July 9.
Wonderful To Fly sat in the breeze and rated 1.58.0 in last week’s $100,000 event and took her record to an imposing six wins and three placings from 11 starts.
Young said he was confident his star filly would measure up to the colts and geldings in the Golden Slipper.
“Going into the Westbred, I thought I would tip her out after the race,” he told The Trots WA.
“The way she went in the Westbred, I would think she would be very competitive.
“That’s not to say she would beat them, but she could give them a run for their money with the right run.
“This group of colts and geldings is a good group and it’s very even, but I think there’s been better groups in the past.”
The Fly Like An Eagle filly will have to overcome a tricky draw in this week’s Gold Bracelet on the way to the Golden Slipper, where she has barrier five.
Despite the tricky draw, Wonderful To Fly still has drawn inside Westbred Classic runner-up Taking The Miki, who came up with barrier six.
Westbred Classic third placegetter Champagne Everyone has drawn barrier three and looks a key chance in the Gold Bracelet, while Make Your Mark has barrier one.
While Young said he wasn’t getting ahead of himself, he was confident Wonderful To Fly could continue her winning ways this week.
“Worst case scenario she will probably be outside Make Your Mark,” he said.
“We probably have to push forward from there, but she can sit in the breeze and do it.
“She’s starting to become a proper racehorse.”
Meanwhile, Minstrel will return to the scene of his Golden Nugget triumph for the first time on Friday night, when he lines up in the Follow Pacing For Pink WA Pace (2503m).
The four-year-old made a winning return at Pinjarra last Monday and will be the only runner off 30m on Friday night.
Stablemate Vampiro will also make his return in Friday’s #PacingForPink Pace (1730m), where he will line up against the likes of Patronus Star, Perfect Major and Major Times.
