Nights Of Thunder winner Argyle Red will look to record another feature race victory at Gloucester Park tomorrow night when he lines up in the Group 2 RWWA Cup (2130m).
The six-year-old caused a mini boilover on January 27 in the Nights Of Thunder Final, when he defeated a high quality line up, headed by Cut For An Ace.
Last start, Argyle Red was beaten more than 20 metres in the Lord Mayors Cup behind Chicago Bull.
He meets a similar field in the RWWA Cup, but trainer Robert MacDonald said he is confident he has Argyle Red in a position to challenge some of his more fancied rivals in the feature event.
“He has only just got into this fast class company,” he said.
“He has got a tougher assignment with Chicago Bull and a few others in the race.
“He’s always been a horse that’s had issues but we are on top of them.
“I think he has matured with racing, and he has got a lot stronger as well.”
MacDonald, who owns and bred the horse from another mare he raced in Dekker Diamond, said he would leave it up to driver Morgan Woodley as to whether he wants to hold the lead from barrier one.
“I imagine there will be a bit of pressure in the race,” he said.
“It does depend who will tackle you for the lead, if Bettors Fire wants to get in front of Chicago Bull lead, then we may look at handing up to him.”
Argyle Red is one of just three horses in MacDonald’s stable, all of which are out of the mare Dekker Diamond.
The RWWA Cup is one of two features on the program at Gloucester Park tomorrow night, and jumps at 8.15pm.
