Dream Lifter’s racing career is reaching the end. After eight wins from 33 starts and a tick over half a million in prize money, retirement is near.
And for trainer Paul Hunter, who has been Dream Lifter’s chief mentor throughout the majority of his racing life, he’s plotting for a fairy tale finish.
Hunter has turned up his expectations that Dream Lifter can bow out on a high note in Sunday’s Mungrup Stud Sprint (1300m) at Mount Barker.
It’s a race that is familiar to Dream Lifter, he won it 2016 and finished second behind Rebel King and Red Ora respectively in the following two years.
Dream Lifter’s last appearance came six months ago when he finished unplaced in the Farnley Stakes (1400m) at Belmont, his final run for Jim Taylor.
In readiness for his return he’s had three trials, including a solid 1000m win three weeks ago when he went to the line untendered.
Holding a top fresh record, Hunter believes Mount Barker’s major sprint, is the right race at the right time at the right track for Dream Lifter.
“He’s had a good run at this track and handles it a lot better than most horses,” Hunter told The Races WA.
“He’s been back in work a while and has overcome all his feet issues.
“He’s definitely near the end, but I’m hoping he can pick up another race.
“We are realistic with where he is at and he has given us a great ride.
“He will be competitive with a bit of luck in the race.
“We will see what happens, but his work this morning (Wednesday) was good.
“Kerry Pascoe who rode him said it was his best this campaign.
“He has given us a great journey and I’m happy to be on him.
“This could be his final race, we’ll assess it after Sunday.”
Dream Lifter has drawn the outside gate in the field of ten. Chris Parnham has been booked to takes his first ride on the son of Danehill Express.
