John Hunt commenced a decorated broadcasting career at Port Hedland, deputising for iconic caller Max Simmonds. After working at 6IX and Channel 9, Hunt joined new TAB station 6PR in 1977 and commentated on greyhound, thoroughbred and harness racing. He called his first WA Pacing Cup in 1977 and a year later hosted a sports and racing programme on Friday nights that was the highest rating programme on 6PR. In 1981 Hunt became the chief trotting caller for 6PR and in 1989, after the retirement of George Grljusich, took over as on-course commentator at Gloucester Park. Hunt was also an avid producer of racing and trotting documentaries and earned a National Meritorious Service Award from the Australian Harness Racing Council in 2006 and the Western Australian Trotting Association’s James Brennan Award in 2008 for his service to industry.
